Software Tools and Parallel Computing for Numerical Weather Prediction Models

چکیده
This paper describes a software environment to facilitate the use of cluster computing for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. It presents an empirical study based on the NCAR/Penn State MM5 model and another mesoscale model developed at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Without appropriate tools, it is tedious and difficult to work with the legacy codes for NWP models. We have used a parallelization tool, a visualization tool, a web-based monitoring tool, a performance analysis tool, a runtime communication library built on top of MPI, and a parallel I/O library. The experimental results provide a performance comparison NWP models on a PC cluster with two different types of networks, a SGI machine, and an IBM SP-2.

Progress Toward Demonstrating Operational Capability of Massively Parallel Processors at the Forecast Systems Laboratory
Two mesoscale numerical weather prediction models, Eta and the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC), are currently being run operationally at the U.S. National Weather Service’s National Meteorological Center to produce nationwide weather forecasts. Improvements in weather forecast accuracy depend on increasing model resolution, which is limited by available computing resources. Massively Parallel Processi...
متن کاملA synoptic-climatology approach to increase the skill of numerical weather predictions over Iran
Simplifications used in regional climate models decrease the accuracy of the regional climate models. To overcome this deficiency, usually a statistical technique of MOS is used to improve the skill of gridded outputs of the Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. In this paper, an experimental synoptic-climatology based method has been used to calibrate, and decrease amount of errors in GFS...

This special issue on \Regional weather models" complements the Oc-tober 1995 special issue on \Climate and weather modeling", which fo-cused on global models. In this introduction we review the similarities and diierences between regional and global atmospheric models. Next, the structure of regional models is described and we consider how the basic algorithms applied in these models innuence ...

This paper describes a high level library (The Nearest Neighbor Tool: NNT) that has been used to parallelize operational weather prediction models. NNT is part of the Scalable Modeling System (SMS), developed at the Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL). Programs written in NNT rely on SMS's run-time system and port between a wide range of computing platforms, performing well in multiprocessor syst...
